The movie begins with Bruce Wayne in his mid-40s, still traumatized by the death of Rachel Dawes. He is forced out of retirement by a new threat: Bane, a highly skilled fighter who plans to destroy Gotham City. Bane kidnaps Miranda Tate (Marion Cotillard), a stockbroker who is secretly working with him.
