Ensure the story has a beginning, middle, and end. Maybe the protagonist starts as someone self-centered, learns from the experience, and grows. Maybe a subplot with his family's disapproval or a romantic relationship. End on a positive note where he helps others and perhaps finds personal fulfillment.
