The movie takes place three years after the events of the previous film. A viral outbreak, known as the Simian Flu, has devastated humanity, wiping out most of the world's population. Caesar, a chimpanzee who was raised by humans, has become the leader of a group of intelligent apes living in a forest near San Francisco. The apes have developed their own language and culture, and are thriving in their new home.
